From Colonial Isolation to Pristine Heritage Sanctuary

Originally purchased in 1893 by the British First Minister of Zanzibar to build a maximum-security prison complex, Changuu Island never actually housed prisoners. Instead, it was converted into an essential quarantine station for the entire East African region to monitor yellow fever outbreaks, leaving behind a beautifully preserved architectural compound surrounded by turquoise waters.

The island's most famous residents are its colony of Aldabra giant tortoises (*Aldabrachelys gigantea*), originally sent as a gift from the British Governor of the Seychelles in 1919.
