Day 01

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

1,860m to 2,700m 8 km 4 - 5 Hours

Following a comprehensive briefing and registration formalities at the park headquarters, your trek commences directly into the dense, mist-shrouded montane rainforest canopy zone. The trail underfoot winds along gentle paths flanked by ancient trees, rich mosses, and vibrant tropical ferns. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and spectacular black-and-white colobus monkeys feeding high in the tree branches. A hot lunch is served en route, before arriving at the neat wooden cabins of Mandara Hut for your evening meal and night's rest.

Day 02

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

2,700m to 3,720m 12 km 6 - 7 Hours

You start the morning climbing out of the last fringes of the rainforest canopy, entering the spectacular low-alpine moorland zone. The horizon opens instantly to reveal massive volcanic landscapes covered in unique giant groundsels, lobelias, and low golden shrubs. The trail pushes up across rolling ridges directly toward the jagged teeth of Mawenzi Peak on your right, while the massive snow-capped dome of Kibo Peak stands tall right in front of you. You reach the sprawling village-like compound of Horombo Hut by late afternoon to allow your body time to rest and adapt to the altitude change.

Day 03

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

3,720m to 4,700m 10 km 5 - 6 Hours

A challenging day of steady altitude gain. Your path passes the last fresh water springs before entering the stark, wind-swew world of the Alpine Desert. Here, you cross the vast "Saddle"—a sweeping lunar landscape that bridges Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The air noticeably thins, and plant life disappears, leaving a dramatic desert plateau of volcanic rock. Walking slow and steady ("pole pole") is critical. You reach Kibo Hut by mid-afternoon, where you will have an early dinner and go to sleep, preparing for the midnight summit push.

Day 04

Summit Night: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak down to Horombo Hut

4,700m to 5,895m to 3,720m 22 km 11 - 14 Hours

Your guide awakens you around midnight with hot tea. Pushing off into the dark, frozen night, you scale the steep, loose volcanic scree switchbacks toward Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically demanding section of the climb. From Gillman's, you trek along the snow-covered crater rim for another hour to reach Uhuru Peak—the true Roof of Africa at 5,895 meters. Watching the sunrise over the glaciers is an unforgettable milestone. Afterward, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Day 05

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

3,720m to 1,860m 20 km 5 - 6 Hours

Your final morning begins with a joyful mountain song celebration from your professional guide, chef, and porter crew. After breakfast, you trace your steps back down through the moorland trails and re-enter the lush rainforest zone. The higher oxygen levels make the walk pleasant and restorative. At Marangu Gate, you receive your official green diploma for reaching Gillman's Point, or a gold certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak. Your private vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to Arusha for celebrations and a hot shower.
