Day 01

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

1,640m to 2,835m 11 km 5 - 7 Hours

Your journey breaks ground at the dense, mist-shrouded southwestern entrance of the park. Registration protocols cleared, you plunge straight into a primeval rainforest ecosystem loaded with massive strangler figs, unique moss extensions, and wild hypericum flowers. The track is frequently damp, demanding a deliberate, slow pace. Blue monkeys slide through the canopy while black-and-white colobus monkeys jump overhead. Arrive by late afternoon to find your private tent city entirely constructed by our mountain porter team.

Day 02

Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

2,835m to 3,850m 5 km 4 - 6 Hours

Wake to an early breakfast before exiting the rainforest zone. The trail climbs a steep, volcanic rock ridge that morphs steadily into the low-alpine moorland ecosystem. The vegetation shifts to giant lobelias and massive groundsels scattered across barren heath fields. Cross a scenic gorge wall onto the grand Shira Plateau—one of the largest high-altitude plateaus on Earth. Look backward to witness the endless Swahili plains rolling out underneath an expansive ocean of clouds.

Day 03

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

3,850m to 4,630m to 3,950m 10 km 6 - 8 Hours

A classic, indispensable acclimatization day. You head due east across a stark high-desert plateau before scaling a rocky volcanic ridge up to Lava Tower—a massive 90-meter-tall ancient volcanic plug. You stop at this high vantage point for a hot lunch while your body naturally adapts to the thinning oxygen levels. Afterward, descend slowly through the scenic, giant senecio-filled paths into the Great Barranco Valley, sleeping at a much lower elevation to protect your altitude safety margins.

Day 04

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

3,950m to 3,995m 5 km 4 - 5 Hours

The morning kicks off with a thrilling scramble up the majestic Great Barranco Wall. While no ropes or technical mountaineering gear are required, you will use your hands to safely scale the stone steps alongside our expert guides. Reaching the top reveals an amazing panoramic vista of Kibo’s southern glaciers. From here, drop across a series of rolling volcanic valleys into Karanga Camp. In the 6-day itinerary, hikers must skip this camp and push straight to high camp, but your 7-day path stops here for a hot lunch, giving your body a relaxing afternoon to rest and adapt.

Day 05

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

3,995m to 4,673m 4 km 3 - 4 Hours

A short, deliberate trek through a completely desolate alpine desert ecosystem. The trail meets up with the Mweka descent route before winding up a steep, windy ridge toward Barafu Camp. Barafu means "ice" in Swahili, and this rocky, exposed ridge is vulnerable to sub-zero alpine winds. You will arrive by early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to organize your summit clothing layers, eat an early dinner, and sleep soundly before the midnight wakeup call.

Day 06

Summit Night: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak down to Mweka Camp

4,673m to 5,895m down to 3,100m 17 km 11 - 15 Hours

Your crew wakes you around midnight with hot tea. Pushing out into the freezing darkness, you climb the steep, loose scree slopes between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the ultimate mental and physical test of the climb. From Stella Point, follow the snow-lined rim for one final hour to reach Uhuru Peak—the absolute summit of Africa at 5,895 meters. Celebrate an unforgettable sunrise over the massive glacial walls before executing a long, steady descent to Barafu for lunch, finally resting your legs at Mweka Camp.

Day 07

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

3,100m to 1,640m 10 km 3 - 4 Hours

Your final morning begins with a joyful mountain celebration song from your professional guides, chefs, and porters. You make a steady descent through the warm, oxygen-rich rainforest zone back down to Mweka Gate. At the gatehouse, check out officially and receive your green diploma for reaching Stella Point, or your gold certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak's true summit. Your private vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Arusha for a long-awaited hot shower and celebratory feast.
