The Magnificent Volcanic Centerpiece

Located inside Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is an impressive active stratovolcano that stands as Tanzania's second-highest peak and Africa's fifth-highest overall. Around 7,800 years ago, a massive explosion collapsed Meru’s entire eastern wall, creating its dramatic horse-shoe crater and steep rocky ridges that challenge and reward modern high-altitude trekkers.

What is Special

The Walking Safari Beginnings

What sets Mount Meru apart from Kilimanjaro is its high density of big game on the lower slopes. Because the trail starts in the savanna corridors of Arusha National Park, the first day of your trek is a guided walking safari. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you hike past herds of giraffes, zebras, buffalos, and black-and-white colobus monkeys jumping through the forest canopy.

Core Features

The Volcanic Ash Cone Crater

One of Meru's most stunning sights is its inner ash cone. Rising symmetrically from the caldera floor, this stark volcanic feature showcases recent geothermal activity. As you ascend toward Rhino Point, the trail runs along a narrow volcanic crater rim, offering a dramatic look down onto the ash cone on one side and steep cliffs on the other.

The Sunrise Kilimanjaro Horizon

Pushing for Mount Meru's summit, Socialist Peak, begins in the middle of the night. As you scramble up the steep volcanic ash slope to the top by sunrise, you are treated to an unmatched view: Mount Kilimanjaro rising majestically out of the clouds 80 kilometers to the east, catching the first golden rays of dawn.
