Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

10 Kilometers 4 - 5 Hours Ranger Escort

Drive from your hotel to Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park for registration. Because the lower slopes are teeming with African buffaloes, giraffes, and zebras, you will begin your wilderness hike escorted by an armed park ranger. Climb steadily through lush mountain forests, passing the massive Fig Tree Arch and Maio Waterfalls before arriving at Miriakamba Hut (2,514m).

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut & Little Meru

8 Kilometers 1,050m Ascent Little Meru Peak

Day two is a steep and demanding sustained climb. Ascend via wooden steps through thick montane forest draped in old mosses up to Elephant Ridge (Mngongo wa Tembo), which reveals beautiful views of the crater floor and ash cone. Enter the alpine moorland zone to reach Saddle Hut (3,566m). In the afternoon, complete a steep acclimatization trek to Little Meru Peak (3,820m).

Midnight Summit Sprint & Momella Gate Descent

4,566m Summit 3,000m Descent 11 - 14 Hours

Wake up at midnight for a light snack and start your summit push. Hike steeply to Rhino Point, then cross a dramatic, narrow volcanic ridge line consisting of rock and loose volcanic ash. Reach Socialist Peak (4,566m) at sunrise to see the sun ignite the sky behind Mount Kilimanjaro. Descend back down to Saddle Hut for brunch, and continue all the way to Momella Gate to meet your return transport.
