The Mighty Chute of the Southwest Circuit

Located in the Kalambo District just outside Sumbawanga town, Kalambo Falls is an extraordinary force of nature. Flowing smoothly over the Rift Valley escarpment, the Kalambo River takes a massive vertical drop before winding through a steep, rocky gorge that empties directly into Lake Tanganyika, forming a spectacular natural boundary line.

The 221-Meter Vertical Plunge

Twice the height of Victoria Falls, Kalambo’s single uninterrupted drop creates a thunderous roar that echoes down the valley. Modern stone lookouts built along the Tanzanian rim allow travelers to stand right at the edge of the cliff, looking down onto the deep, misty pool and watching rare Marabou storks nesting on the canyon walls.

The World-Famous Stone Age Artifacts

Beyond its geological power, Kalambo is one of Africa’s most vital archaeological sites. Excavations behind the falls revealed continuous human occupation dating back over 300,000 years. It holds some of the earliest evidence of human fire usage and incredibly preserved organic wooden structures made by Stone Age cultures.
