Where Natural Wonders Meet Deep Human Ancestry

Located just 13 kilometers down the main highway from the highland city of Igalula and Iringa, the Isimila Site is a stunning destination. Once an ancient, shallow lake basin frequented by prehistoric hominids, a dramatic period of flash erosion carved out a network of steep mini-canyons, leaving behind architectural fluted columns and a literal open-air stone-tool workshop.

The Towering Sandstone Columns

The main highlight of the canyon walk is the canyon of pillars. As rainwater washed away the soft soils over thousands of years, hard capped sandstone segments stood strong, leaving behind smooth, majestic fluted towers reaching up to 15 meters high. Guided walks down the dry canyon beds place you right at the base of these impressive spires.

The Open-Air Stone Tool Workshop

Discovered first in 1951, Isimila stands as one of the richest Acheulean tool concentrations on Earth, dating back between 300,000 and 400,000 years. Walk past old excavation beds left exactly as archaeologists found them, showing massive stone hand axes, scrapers, and round hammerstones made by our hominid ancestors.
