Located about 40 kilometers north of the main Ngorongoro Crater, Empakai is a pristine volcanic collapse structure that remains beautifully isolated from traditional safari vehicle crowds. Guided by an armed national park ranger, walkers hike down a steep, winding switchback trail cut directly into the dense montane forest canopy. Reaching the crater floor brings you directly to the muddy banks of the central alkaline lake. The water's deep chemistry sustains a rich bloom of spirulina algae, attracting thousands of brilliant pink lesser flamingos. Unlike at more crowded Rift Valley lakes, at Empakai you can stand quietly on the shoreline on foot, watching the flamingos call and feed without vehicle noise.
