The Untouched Paradise of the Ngorongoro Highlands

Located about 40 kilometers north of the main Ngorongoro Crater, Empakai is a pristine volcanic collapse structure that remains beautifully isolated from traditional safari vehicle crowds. Surrounded by towering walls covered in thick montane forest, the crater floor is dominated by an emerald salt lake that acts as a vital magnetic corridor for massive flocks of migratory birdlife.

The Dramatic 300-Meter Rainforest Descent

Because driving on the crater floor is completely forbidden, Empakai is explored entirely on foot. Guided by an armed national park ranger, walkers hike down a steep, winding switchback trail cut directly into the dense montane forest canopy. The 45-minute descent brings you through colossal wild fig trees, tangled lianas, and colorful orchids.

The Pink Shrimping Shorelines

Reaching the crater floor brings you directly to the muddy banks of the central alkaline lake. The water's deep chemistry sustains a rich bloom of spirulina algae, attracting thousands of brilliant pink lesser flamingos. Unlike at more crowded Rift Valley lakes, at Empakai you can stand quietly on the shoreline on foot, watching the flamingos call and feed without vehicle noise.

Views of Ol Doinyo Lengai & Beyond

The high volcanic rim of Empakai provides some of the most expansive views in northern Tanzania. On a clear day, looking northward across the rugged Rift Valley drops reveals the unmistakable, white-capped active cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Looking eastward, you can even spot the vast blue waters of Lake Natron and the ancient volcanic ridges of Mount Kilimanjaro on the distant horizon.
