The Unspoiled Giant of the Western Circuit

Gazetted recently in 2019 by combining three historic game reserves, Burigi-Chato National Park is an enormous sanctuary remaining beautifully free from standard traveler crowds. Its complex landscape encompasses deep valleys lined with forests, swampy inlets, rocky crags, and miles of tall-grass Miombo wooded savannas.

The Tranquil Lake Boating Safaris

As the third-largest lake in Tanzania, the long expansion of Lake Burigi serves as a central jewel for aquatic safaris. Gliding across its quiet channels and island inlets provides an exceptional alternative perspective to spot large hippo pods, sun-basking crocodiles, and herds of the rare, swamp-dwelling Sitatunga antelope moving through the papyrus reeds.

The Cape Eland & Big Five Outposts

Burigi-Chato is a famous stronghold for one of the largest antelopes in the world—the statuesque Cape Eland. Traversing the open grasslands and acacia woodlands in a private open-top 4x4 allows you to easily track increasing populations of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and newly introduced lion prides away from any other crowds.

Tracking the Prehistoric Shoebill Stork

With over 400 recorded species of birds, Burigi-Chato stands as a critical destination for serious bird watchers. The swampy bays along the lakeshores provide key nesting corridors for the highly elusive, prehistoric-looking Shoebill stork, alongside African fish eagles, Grey Crowned cranes, and brilliantly colored papyrus gonoleks.
